On Saturday, October 13th, we distributed 1,400 food and hygiene boxes to needy families in Hamilton! We partnered with the Hamilton Ti-Cats, Maple Leaf Foods, Dempster’s, and TiCats offensive lineman Marwan Hage and his community initiative, Hage’s Heroes. Each organization played a vital role to deliver this much-needed help. The boxes were distributed to people at Ivor Wynne Stadium and some were delivered to several Hamilton social agencies. The social agencies supporting this event include The Salvation Army, Good Shepherd Centre, Homestead
Christian Care, Micah House, Parkview Church, and Hughson Street Baptist Church. The food boxes contained non-perishable items such as ravioli, pasta sauce, beef stew, fruit cups, pudding cups, canned vegetables, cookies, and canned chicken. One recipient of the boxes said, “I was at Ivor Wynn Stadium on Saturday, for the food and hygiene products giveaway that you sponsored. I wanted to thank you for the donation. It was very nice and very welcome. Keep up the good work.” Thanks to Dempster’s, fresh bread was handed out too.
Although it was a cool day, the rain held off and kids got to enjoy jumping in the bouncy
castle. The volunteers from the TiCats as well as Scott Cull’s group of volunteers – the “bumble bees”, were a huge help!
Speroway President, Ken Dick says, “This is the 5th year for this event where Speroway has distributed food and hygiene boxes in the Hamilton area. We have an ongoing program delivering food and other supplies to various groups in Hamilton every month. Although we are actively involved in overseas feeding programs, medical/dental clinics in Central America, and caring for needy children in Haiti and Kenya, we recognize our responsibility to assist in meeting the needs of hungry families here at home.” In the 2011/2012 fiscal year, we are happy to have delivered more than $1.4 million in goods and supplies to community support groups in Hamilton, Ontario. Meeting the needs of hungry children and families is why Speroway exists – delivering hope in Canada and around the world!
