Hope for Immigrant Families in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario

Too excited to wait until she reached her apartment, a grateful, and somewhat overwhelmed, mother tore into one of her Speroway boxes at the elevator of her Waterloo apartment building home to many new immigrants to Canada. “These are just the things we needed,” she exclaimed to one of the seventeen volunteers and staff members from Koinonia Christian Fellowship who came out to build relationships and bless these families.

Over 55 new immigrants, mainly women and children, attended the party hosted and organized by Koinonia Christian Fellowship, a church in Bloomingdale, Ontario. Following a delicious meal of barbecued chicken, salads, veggies and homemade cupcakes, volunteers gathered together the children of all ages from toddlers to teens to take part in some fun, interactive skits and games with prizes.

Mothers, most of them of them solo parents, enjoyed a break and opened their hearts as they visited with each other and the volunteers who helped to greet them and serve the meal. Koinonia, a Greek word meaning partnership or fellowship, is a good name for this church that believes in building relationships with God, one another and the world.

After finishing a four-part DVD study by Max Lucado, entitled, “Outlive Your Life”, members of the local church were inspired to live beyond themselves – finding ways to reach out and be a blessing in the community. Consequently, they have partnered with Speroway to deliver hope to families. As the festivities concluded, volunteers gave each of the families two Speroway boxes – one filled with food and another with hygiene products and diapers. Boxes were delivered to families who were not able to make the party because they were ill. Pastors and volunteers at Koinonia say, “Thank you, Speroway, for your                                                                                       generosity and for letting us partner with you in                                                                                     your mission to offer a hopeful way forward!
