Mishkeegogamang Kids Go to Muskoka Woods Camp

“This is going to be quite the adventure for our kids,” said one of the mothers who had three children invited to attend a week at Muskoka Woods Sports Resort.  And what an adventure it was.  After a 24 hour road trip in a 16-passenger school bus, 11 kids arrived ready to have the experience of a lifetime.

Muskoka Woods was a wonderful host who took the Mish kids and 6 Speroway staff through many of the activities – swimming, canoeing, zip lining, sports, crafts, paintball, tubing and a giant swing.  Many of the activities were difficult so the kids were encouraged to challenge themselves to rise above their fears and feelings of inadequacy.

The Speroway staff along with an aboriginal couple, Peta and Gerard, talked to the kids about being proud of who God made them to be – encouraging them to look past their difficulties and to work on being leaders in their community.  They enjoyed learning about building a drum and how to use their culture to worship the Creator.  They also learned a fancy jingle dress dance as well as how God has made us all uniquely wonderful.

“Can we come back next year?” was the question asked by each one as we made the long trek back up to Mishkeegogamang.  “This was the best week of my life and I don’t want it to end”.  We hope we can do this again in the future because we saw what it meant to these kids and what great life skills they’ve taken home with them. They had wonderful experiences and awesome relationships were built this week – thank you Speroway for making this possible!
